Professor Homero M. Magaña, M.A., M.S., PPS, distinguishes himself as a tenure-track instructor and Fieldwork Coordinator within the Graduate Counselor Education Program at California Lutheran University. He is also in his first year as a doctoral student in the Higher Education Leadership Program at California Lutheran University. His dedication to academic excellence is further exemplified in his role as Faculty Coach for the “Collaborative for Hispanics in Higher Education & Student Success” (CHESS) Male Initiative, housed in the Department of Arts and Sciences. This initiative reflects his commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment, focusing on supporting the advancement of Hispanic male students in higher education.
Over eighteen years, he has guided students at all levels of education, from elementary through high school. He embraced pivotal roles during his 14 years at Moorpark Unified School District. As a school counselor, he championed the needs of English language learners and spearheaded the AVID program for several years, significantly enhancing students’ academic journeys. His administrative roles, including overseeing individual education plans and coordinating the 504, AVID, and diversity programs, allowed him to shape educational policies and practices. More than just responsibilities, these roles were his avenues to forge meaningful change, directly impacting the school’s culture and extending his influence into the community. His dedication supported students’ growth and catered to the school district’s needs. Each experience enriched his understanding of the critical importance of collaboration, consultation, and adequate supervision in creating supportive educational spaces. In his commitment to working closely with students and their families, he aimed to foster an environment where everyone felt valued, supported, and motivated. Handling caseloads that sometimes reached up to 1,200 students presented challenges, yet each day was an opportunity for learning, growth, and deeper community connection. Reflecting on these two decades, he valued the myriad interactions that deepened his insights into resilience, diversity, and the transformative power of education.
As the visionary Founder and President/CEO of Magaña Education Consulting, LLC, he is committed to empowering individuals to lead radically intentional lives. His organization is dedicated to enhancing the expertise of educational professionals, such as administrators and school counselors, by providing comprehensive Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 services. Homero’s inspiring presentations pull from his experience overcoming poverty as an immigrant, migrant farmworker, first-generation college student, and English Language Learner.
One remarkable highlight in Homero’s career was his participation in a White House Convening with national leaders in school counseling. Homero was selected as the only school counselor practitioner in the nation to share his best school counseling practices with key figures and Michelle Obama’s education advisors.
Following this, he received a special invitation from the White House to share his compelling narrative and introduce Michelle Obama at the College Opportunity Summit.
The former First Lady launched her impactful Reach Higher Initiative at this event. Homero and his wife were invited to attend the White House Christmas Holiday Party for a third time and interact briefly with President Obama and Michelle Obama.
